The Houston City Council filled a vacancy Thursday night.

The Houston City Council picked a replacement Thursday for a vacancy on the governing body.

Mary Barnes, a Second Street resident, was selected after five interviews with candidates.

An employee of Texas County Memorial Hospital, Barnes will serve until the April municipal election. At that time, the balance of the term — one year — will be filled. Sharon Sillyman, Ward I representative, resigned due to a move.

In other matters, the council:

—Authorized additional work as part of a hangar construction project at Houston Memorial Airport. A terminal with storage, washroom, showers and bathroom will be created.

The city won a FAA grant to construct 10 new hangars at the northeast perimeter of the airport.

—Heard the council’s next meeting is Sept. 23. During its normal regular time (Sept. 16), city officials will attend a Missouri Municipal League conference.
