A new member of the Houston City Council was sworn in Monday.
Mary Barnes recently was appointed to represent Ward I until an election next spring.
Members of the council met Monday and discussed several issues:
—Approved plans to install better lighting near a copper awning at Lone Star Plaza, discussed the possibility of adding video equipment and encouraging students using the nearby parking lot at night to use trash cans. A delegation from Downtown Houston Inc. and the police department visited about correcting problems with trash on the lot.
—Approved a $1,500 allocation to the Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston to send youth to a statewide conference next month. Houston is competing in its population category.
—Authorized a $100 payment to organizers of a downtown trick or treat event.
—Discussed the mayor’s annual prayer breakfast, which is Oct. 12 at the community building at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds on North U.S. 63.
—Learned the city’s fall clean-up days are Oct. 14-17.
