A budget committee comprised of members of the Houston City Council worked on the 2014 budget Monday.
Houston’s health insurance for its employees is taking a 40 percent hike, and the committee is looking at alternatives as it develops the spending plan for 2014.
The meeting followed the regular council gathering that saw members approve an updated employee manual that was last adopted in 2002.
In other matters, members:
—Heard that the mayor’s prayer breakfast is Saturday at the community building at the Houston Area Chamber of Commerce Fairgrounds. Next week is the city’s annual fall cleanup. Items should be placed at curbside on normal trash collection day.
—Heard from David Klotz and Bobby Amburn related to a downtown free promotion slated for Thursday, Oct. 17.
