The Houston boys’ basketball team hasn’t had a winning record at any point during the last three seasons.
The 2013-’14 team changed that.
The Tigers have won three of their last four games after cruising past Norwood 59-40 Saturday afternoon in the consolation final of the Mansfield Invitational.
HHS (4-3) beat Stoutland and New Covenant on consecutive days last week for the program’s first winning streak since the 2010 season. That was also the last time the Tigers had a winning record.
After a tough three-point loss Friday to Plato, HHS bounced back with its biggest victory of the season to earn a piece of tournament hardware.
“These kids keep fighting,” first-year Tigers coach Rob Coffey said. “The wins are nice, but I’m more proud of their effort and the way they are playing together.”
Senior Aaron Cantrell led four players in double figures with 15 points. Devin Coulter and Kolby Walker scored 13 apiece, and Keegan Spurlin added 10.
Coulter made the all-tournament team.
Houston’s winning ways began last Tuesday with a 66-65 double overtime victory at Stoutland. The following afternoon, the Tigers beat New Covenant 50-37 in the Mansfield Invitational. Coulter scored 18 points, Cantrell had 15 and Walker added 13.
Cantrell had a team-best 17 rebounds and four blocked shots for HHS.
“We have better balance this season,” Coffey said. “Last year, we had to rely on one guy to do all the scoring. This year, we usually have three or four guys in double figures.”
The Tigers’ winning streak ended Friday with a 48-45 home loss to Plato.
Coulter hit four 3-pointers en route to a team-best 21 points. Cantrell added 11 for Houston, which was 7-for-12 at the foul line.
Plato never trailed after a 22-9 second quarter edge. Keagan Adams led the Eagles with 22 points.
