Bushes and other surfaces bear a coating of ice as a City of Houston Fire Department firefighter sprays water from a water cannon on a house fire early Friday morning in Raymondville.

Firefighters from four Texas County departments were busy in the early hours of last Friday morning.

Houston Rural Fire Chief Don Gaston said trucks from his department, the City of Houston, Raymondville and Licking all responded to house fire at about 4 a.m. on Highway B near the Raymondville School.

Despite their efforts in the sub-freezing temperatures, the home was a total loss. Gaston said fighting the blaze in the wintry conditions was an eye-opener for some of the newer firefighters.

“It was ice cold and lot of the guys looked like snowmen,” he said. “It was treacherous; everything and everyone was iced down. It wasn’t the first time I’d seen that, but it was the first time some of the younger guys had experienced the cold like that.”

Gaston said there were no injuries and the cause of the blaze was unknown.
