Jean (Lay) Hines, 89, of Sullivan, Mo., passed away Feb. 19, 2014, in St. Louis, Mo. She was the daughter of Lucian and Edna (Clark) Lay and was born Nov. 8, 1924, in Eunice, Mo.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one sister; and two daughters.
She is survived by a daughter, Kay Northup of Chesterfield, Mo.; a son, Vern Hines, Jr. of Godfrey, Ill.; a daughter, Pat Halverson of Mountain Home, Ark.; five grandchildren; two sisters, Betty Best of Mountain View, Mo., and Wilma Burger of Tulsa, Okla.; and one brother, Kenneth Lay of Houston, Mo.
Jean graduated from Summersville High School in 1942.
She married Vern Hines on Sept. 18, 1945, and they had five children. Jean worked as a machinist in finishing operations until the age of 86. In 2008, Jean was chosen as the Outstanding Older Worker of Missouri. She represented the state of Missouri at the Experience Works Prime Time Awards in Washington D.C. in September of 2008.
She enjoyed having her tomatoes, cucumbers and assorted flowers in her backyard. Jean was an outstanding St. Louis Cardinals’ baseball fan.
She will be greatly missed.
No visitation will be held. Services were Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at Evans Funeral Home with Bro. Don Elliott officiating. Burial was in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction Evans Funeral Home.
