One person was injured after an accident Monday afternoon and the roadway closed, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

A two-vehicle crash closed Highway 17 Monday afternoon after a trailer-truck unit struck the bridge at Big Creek, which is situated east of Yukon.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a northbound 1999 Isuzu Rodeo driven by Stephen K. O’Neal, 57, of Salem, crossed the center line and struck the northbound trailer of the 1999 International driven by Jesse R. Murphy, 22, of Doniphan. The rig struck the bridge, causing it to close, the Missouri Department of Transportation said. MoDOT said at about 1:30 p.m. it expected the bridge to be closed for about four hours.

O’Neal, who had moderate injuries, was taken to Texas County Memorial Hospital in Houston. Cpl. Dale Pounds said O’Neal was not wearing a seat belt. Murphy was wearing a seat belt, and he was not injured.

Members of the fire departments at Raymondville and Summersville were called to the scene, which is about 14 miles southeast of Houston. Traffic was diverted to Bear Claw Road while the wreck scene was cleared and MoDOT inspected the bridge.

Summersville firefighters had been called to a brush fire at the end of Highway WW, and some were sent to the crash site.
