A crowd gathers in October at the Lone Star Plaza in Houston for a downtown evening of fun, food, music and other activities. It was the last event until one planned Saturday.

An event in downtown Houston — organized to spark activity along Grand Avenue — is planned for 5 p.m. Saturday, April 5.

Organizers said the first Saturday of each month has been set for activities in the downtown business district. The first one is dubbed the “Spring Fling, Cruise-in and Street Dance.”

The Route 63 Car Club is expected to show vehicles, the South U.S. 63 Band will perform and the event will include local entertainers. Activities will occur in and around the Lone Star Plaza at Pine Street and Grand Avenue.  Activities for children, including a bounce house, are planned.

Vendor space also is available. The cost is $10 for one space and $5 for the next one. Persons can call Bob Auburn at 417-217-9719 for their reservation.

Participants are asked to bring a lawn chair. Organizers hope to attract a large crowd downtown because a crew will shoot footage for a television program that features Houston.

A bigger event — complete with midway — is planned for May 1-3.

Activities in the downtown began last fall and attracted a crowd. Volunteers interested in revitalizing the downtown organize them.
