A crowd gathers in October at the Lone Star Plaza in Houston for a downtown evening of fun, food, music and other activities. It was the last event until one planned Saturday.

Downtown Houston is expected to be hopping with activity today as the first of several monthly events gets under way.

Organizers said the first Saturday of each month has been set for activities in the downtown business district. The first one, which begins at 5 p.m., is dubbed the “Spring Fling, Cruise-in and Street Dance.”

The Route 63 Car Club is expected to show vehicles. Alyson Greene, a country artist, will perform, as will Chris Johnson of Mountain Grove and local talent. Activities will occur in and around the Lone Star Plaza at Pine Street and Grand Avenue. Activities for children are planned, including a bounce house.

Vendor space also is available. The cost is $10 for one space and $5 for a second. Call Bob Auburn at 417-217-9719 to reserve space.

Attendees are asked to bring a lawn chair. Organizers hope to attract a large crowd downtown because a crew will record video for a television program highlighting Houston.

A bigger event — complete with carnival midway — is planned for May 1-3. The events are organized by volunteers interested in revitalizing downtown Houston.
