As Houston Rural Fire Association assistant chief Jon Cook surveys the situation, firefighter Frank Chapman sprays a hot spot under a storage shed Saturday afternoon on Highway DD east of Houston.

Three brush trucks and six firefighters from the Houston Rural Fire Association responded at about 2:30 p.m. Saturday to a fire at a property owned by Doyle Lay on Highway DD about 10 miles east of Houston near Tyrone.

Before it was extinguished, the blaze burned about an acre of brush-covered land, destroyed a Dodge Caravan, damaged a storage shed and scorched several other items. The fire came within a foot or two of a home on the property, but aided by the wind direction, firefighters kept flames away from the structure.

The fire reportedly began when a material from a small burn pile was carried away by a gust of wind.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol officer also responded to the scene.
