Associate commissioner John Casey holds one of the signs that will soon be placed alongside roadways at the point where they enter Texas County.

Texas County last week was designated as a Purple Heart County during a proclamation ceremony at the county administrative building on Grand Avenue in Houston.

Presiding Commissioner Fred Stenger, said signs depicting the Purple Heart County designation will be posted at roadway entry points into the county.

Sponsorship of the signs is available for $100 apiece and Stenger said eight have already been sponsored. The first seven points where signs will be erected include where U.S. 63 and Highway 17 enter the county and at Fort Leonard Wood’s south gate.

Stenger said there are a total of 26 points where roads enter the county, and the end goal is to erect a sign at each point.

“We’re pretty proud of our military people,” Stenger said.

Texas County is the ninth county in the state to be designated as a Purple Heart County. Stenger said the City of Houston has pledged involvement and signs will be posted where U.S. 63 and Highway 17 enter city limits, and that he hopes for participation by other county cities.
