Fifteen members of the Houston Red Hat Society gathered on Wednesday of last week in front of the soda fountain at Forbes’ Pharmacy on Grand Avenue. The gathering marked the 10th anniversary of the group (a.k.a. the Red Hat Mamas), which first met April 29, 2004, also at Forbes’. It also marked the conclusion of Queen Mother Marylee Lowrey’s reign.
On its website, the Red Hat Society indicates it’s “a global society of women that connects, supports and encourages women in their pursuit of fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness.” Women over age 50 are known as “Red Hatters,” while those under 50 are “Pink Hatters.”
The local contingent plans to continue meeting monthly, to “leave no fun undone.” Six of the ladies attending the get-together were present for the inaugural meeting in 2004. Cindy Haley will succeed Lowrey as the group’s leader
