A woman who was riding a motorcycle was killed in a 3:09 p.m. accident Saturday about three miles south of Licking on Highway 137.

One person died Saturday in an accident south of Licking that sent numerous emergency responders to the scene.

Dead is Nancy E. James, 44, of Licking, a rider on a motorcycle, who was pronounced dead at the scene by Texas County Coroner Thomas Whittaker, said Cpl. Curtis Haden of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Authorities said the mishap — near Highways 137 and P — occurred when a northbound 1978 Harley Davidson operated by Mark D. Griffith, 50, of Beulah, overtook several vehicles, striking a northbound 2004 Jeep in the rear driven by Larry D. Booker, 69, of Licking.

The motorcycle overturned, throwing Griffith and James, who were both wearing helmets, according to a report.

Haden said a northbound 2011 Yamaha motorcycle driven by Kevin A. Warren, 29, of Licking, struck Griffith in the roadway, traveled off the highway, came to a stop and then left the scene.

Griffith was flown from the scene by medical helicopter to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. Booker was not injured.

Assisting Haden at the scene were Cpl. Terry Nelson, Tpr. Myron Downing, Tpr. Curtis Hubbs, Sgt. S.R. Richardson of the Major Crash Investigation Unit and Tpr. P.R. Wells of the division of drug and crime control.

Firefighters from Licking and Raymondville also assisted. Investigators were on the scene for several hours.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman said Monday that the investigation is continuing.
