After a vote by Texas County Emergency Services board members Wednesday evening, the location of the county’s new 911 call center will be in the county administration building on Grand Avenue in downtown Houston in space formerly occupied by the county jail.
Board Chairperson Carol Ann Freeman said six of the board’s seven members were present for the vote, and the old jail was selected 5-to-1 over the storm shelter building on First Street. The new call center will be the result of voter approval in April of a 3/8-cent retail sales tax to fund a single-county 911 system after Wright County officials decided last year to end a two-county system created after an agreement in the mid-1990s.
The county is already fielding bids from contractors for the refurbishing of the old jail space. Freeman said Jan. 1 has been set as a tentative date for the new call center to be up and running.
“It just depends on when the construction can be completed,” she said.
