Friday's football game will feature a food drive to assist the Texas County Food Pantry, it was announced Tuesday.

The Texas County Food Pantry has partnered with the Houston and Cabool school districts to conduct a food drive at this Friday’s Texas County championship football game at Tiger Stadium in Houston.

Taking place as the Houston High School Tigers take on the visiting Cabool Bulldogs, the “Texas County Football Food Drive” is designed to provide non-perishable food items to needy families around the county.

In August, the food pantry provided food assistance to 595 families in Texas County.

“The food needs are greater now than before due to issues involving delays in food stamp applications,” said pantry director Bennie Cook.

Cook said ideas for contributions to the football food drive include canned goods (chicken noodle soup, ravioli, canned vegetables, etc.), juice and boxed or packaged dry goods (like noodles, rice or beans).

Cook said that this year, 38 students are enrolled in the Blessings in a Backpack weekend food program at Houston Elementary School, and receive additional food before every weekend.
