The Houston Police Department handled several investigations during the last week.

The following reports were generated last week by the Houston Police Department:

•Kendrick S. Brown, 23, of 15955 Cleveland Road in Houston, was issued a citation for following too closely after a two-vehicle crash Aug. 27 at U.S. 63 and Highway 17.

•James E. Coats, 38, of 100 Redbud in Houston, was issued a citation for animal neglect after an officer observed an abandoned dog in his residence on Wednesday, Aug. 6.

The officer determined Coats had been at the residence since the previous Friday, and that there was no food or water inside and no operational utilities. The dog, a beagle, was taken to The Animal Shelter of Texas County.

Coats was cited again on Aug. 24 after officers were dispatched to Walmart regarding a report of trespassing. The officers made contact with a store representative who stated Coats had been issued and had signed a trespass notice on May 11, but was seen in the store’s parking lot near the entrance.

This time Coats was issued citations for first-degree trespassing and unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. Authorities said the drug charge was due to a homemade smoking device found in his pocket.

A 36-year-old Houston woman who was with Coats was also suspected of drug violations, because officers reportedly found items in her possession that bore a white powdery residue that tested positive for methamphetamine. A probable cause statement seeking charges against her was sent to the county prosecutor.

•Dylon M. Wilkins, 18, of 703 Chestnut St. in Houston, was issued a citation for third-degree assault after punching a 17-year-old male in the face several times during an altercation at First and Mill streets at about 6:15 p.m. Aug. 16.

•Zachary G. Gregory, 17, of 7629 Brown Hill Road in Houston, was issued a citation Aug. 29 for failure to stop at a posted stop sign.

•James E. Burris III, 20, of 225 Fredrick St. in Houston, was issued a citation Aug. 30 for minor in possession of alcohol by consumption. Burris was cited after an officer investigating another matter smelled alcohol on his breath while questioning him.

•Ryan L. Wolfe, 22, of 1403 Cherokee Circle in Houston, was issued citations for failure to signal and possession of marijuana after a traffic stop on U.S. 63 at about 1:20 a.m. Aug. 24.

An officer made the stop after observing a white Nissan Maxima turn from First Street onto U.S. 63 without signaling. After making contact wit the driver, the officer smelled alcohol and field sobriety tests were conducted.

Two small bags of suspected pot were reportedly found in Wolfe’s pocket. The HPD’s K-9 unit was called in and the department’s drug dog, Rooke, alerted on the right front passenger’s side of Wolfe’s vehicle, where a bag containing marijuana seeds was found.

Wolfe was taken to the Texas County Jail, where he was fingerprinted and released pending an October court date.
