James Albert Smith, 76, passed away Thursday, Sept. 18, 2014, at Mercy St. Francis Hospital.
He was born March 31, 1938, in Summersville, son of Ray Smith and Sarah Ellen Pittman. He and Clara Lucille Gale were married Feb. 7, 1962.
He worked for township roadwork and Montauk park maintenance, but he spent most of his life working timber and scrap metal. He also built two family homes.
He enjoyed studying the Bible, working in the garden, cleaning scrap metal, playing chess, fishing, hunting, camping and visiting with family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Clara Lucille Smith; an infant daughter, Deborah Lynn Smith; his parents; four brothers, Ray Smith, Amos Smith, Elmer Smith and Dean Smith; a sister Georgia Stoops; and three great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children, Nancy Cornelison of Summersville, Sharon Labbee of Hartshorn, James Smith Jr. of Houston and Donna Smith, Billy Smith of Raymondville, Carrie Smith and Stanley Smith, of Raymondville; a grandson, Billy Smith Jr. of the home; 24 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services were Sunday, Sept. 21, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Ford officiating. Burial was in Antioch Cemetery.
