George Melvin “Shorty” Burris, 87, passed away Sunday, Sept. 7, 2014, in Miami, Fla.
He was born May 31, 1927, in Ellis Prairie, son of George Frank and Olive Esther Willis Burris. He and Ruth Kemper were married Dec. 23, 1950.
He grew up in Success and attended Houston High School.
He served 20 years in the Air Force as a helicopter tech sergeant.
He was a Scottish Rite Mason.
He enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling in the RV around the country with his wife, Ruth, visiting friends and family. He loved to listen to music and play games, including dominoes, cards and washers. Watching baseball and football were a favorite pastime. He kept up with his hometown by reading the newspaper.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth; a brother, Marvin Burris; and a sister, Mildred Mitchell.
Survivors five children, Barbara Frye, Sherry Moore, George Burris Jr., Jacquelyn Colon and Dwight Burris; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Marlene Hubbs.
Services were Saturday, Sept. 13, at Ellis Prairie Baptist Church with Pastor Ralph Baker officiating. Burial was in Ellis Prairie Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
