Sales tax in Texas County increased by 3/8 percent today as funding for the county’s new 911 system kicks in.
Approved by county voters last April, the hike will fund the operation of the Texas County Emergency Services center inside the county administrative building on Grand Avenue in Houston (the old courthouse). The call center will be moved from the current location on the Texas County Memorial Hospital campus, where Wri-Tex 911 has operated since the mid-1990s.
Wri-Tex 911 is being dissolved after officials in Wright County last year decided to end a two-county arrangement that began in January 1995. The Texas County commission in June appointed a seven-member board to oversee the new system. The board is chaired by former Wri-Tex 911 director Carol Ann Freeman, of Cabool.
