Christos House officials gather for a proclamation signing.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is held in October in Texas County.

Commissioners Linda Garrett, John Casey and Fred Stenger signed a resolution that was attended by Rita Foster, Christos House Texas County outreach advocate; and Kelli Neal, Christos House shelter manager.

The proclamation states that one in four women and one in 14 men will experience some form of domestic violence in their lifetime.  In 2013, Missouri domestic violence programs provided a safe place to stay for more than 10,000 adults, youth and children, but were forced to turn away more than 21,000 others due to lack of space.

Organizers said the crime of domestic violence violates members of the community’s privacy, dignity, security and humanity in the form of physical, emotional, sexual, psychological and economic abuse.
