Military veteran

Vernie Herbert “Herb” Roark passed away Friday, Nov. 14, 2014, in West Plains.

He was born Aug. 4, 1922, in Koshkonong, son of William and Mary Bell Madden Roark. He and Emma Miller were married Jan. 3, 1951.

He was a lifetime dairy farmer having started milking cows at the age of 17. He was involved in the dairy industry for 71 years.

He was proud of his military service, having participated in the liberation of the Philippines and then serving in the occupation of the Japanese homeland.

He and his wife, Emma, worked side by side to create a family, home and farm. He was a loving father to eight children.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings.

Survivors include eight children, Janie Roark, Wanda Roark and Charles Roark of the home in Koshkonong, Bill Roark and Jim Roark of Koshkonong, Wilda McNiell and her husband, Jim, of Houston, Vernie Roark of Thayer and Sheila Smith of West Plains, Missouri; 11 grandchildren, including Jeff McNiell and his wife, Brittney, of Houston; and six great-grandchildren, including Gracyn and Landrum McNiell of Houston.

Services were Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Wayside Union Church in Koshkonong. Burial was in Wayside Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Inc., West Plains.
