VERBA ALKIRE

Verba Jewell Alkire, age 69, was born to Herbert E. Lewis and Lillian (Duncan) on Dec. 20, 1944. She went to be with her Lord on Nov. 12, 2014, at Mercy Hospital, Springfield, Mo., after a hard fought battle with cancer.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Verba was united in marriage to Ralph Alkire, Sr. on July 1, 1995. They resided in Success, Mo., where she enjoyed raising cattle, gardening and spending time with her granddaughter.

She is survived by her husband, Ralph of their home in Success, Mo.; her daughters, Alice Pearce of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Teresa Pearce of Success, Mo.; her mother, Lillian Chalk of Rolla, Mo.; a brother, Leon Lewis of Citrus Heights, Calif.; three stepsons, Ralph Alkire, Jr, of Mountain Grove, Mo., David Alkire of Bucyrus, Mo., and Jeremy Alkire of Ohio; two half-brothers, Dennis Lewis of Clinton, Mo., and Danny Lewis of Rolla, Mo.; a half sister, Dena Houston, of Rolla, Mo.; and six grandchildren, Jadyne Curnutt, Kyle Williams, Nathaniel Alkire, Cloe Alkire, Brooklyn Alkire and Keala Alkire.

Verba retired after almost 30 years of service with the Department of Defense at Ft. Leonard Wood.

Verba was a perfect example of a Christian woman, always giving of herself, putting others needs above her own. She was a proud member of the Roby Christian Church since 1980.

She was loved and adored by all who knew her.

Services were 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2014, at Roby Christian Church with Pastor Jeff Wofford and Leon Mitchell officiating. Pallbearers were Kyle Williams, David Alkire, Ralph Alkire, Jr., Oren Grainer, Mike Beasley and Andy Justice. Honorary Pallbearers were Robert Stroud and Nathaniel Alkire. Burial was in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
