Wanda Maxine Shelton, 87, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2015, at her daughter’s home in Springfield.
She was born Dec. 22, 1927, in Mt. Vernon, Ill., daughter of Charles Edward “Ed” and Elsie Vivian Lowry Higginson. She and Vancil Shelton were married Sept. 11, 1945, in Columbia, S.C.
She moved to Houston as a child and graduated from Houston High School in 1945.
She and her husband lived in the Houston area most of her life except for a short time when they resided in southern California.
She worked as a secretary in the Houston High School for 14 years and retired from there.
She was baptized at Ozark Baptist Church in 1943 and transferred her membership to Houston First Baptist in 1969.
She enjoyed sewing, playing piano, violin, working in her flower garden, arts and crafts and playing card games with her family and friends. Her greatest love was taking care of her family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Vancil; and two brothers, Edward “Bud” Higginson and Virgil Lee Higginson.
Survivors include five daughters, Connie Hayse of Las Vegas, Nev., Brenda Eldredge of Lehi, Utah, Karla Nelson of Fultondale, Alab., Pam McKinney of Leesburg, Ga., and Barb Merckling of Springfield; 28 grandchildren; 56 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; and numerous other family and friends.
Graveside services were Saturday, Jan. 31, in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Texas County Food Pantry.
