The Houston football program will participate in the Ozarks Football League thanks to community support that easily exceeded fundraising efforts.
Eric Sloan, who along with Vince McCrosky is leading the push, said Monday morning the current total of funds raised following a fish fry Saturday evening is $6,478. He expects the final total will be close to $7,000.
The coaches needed $3,000 to place a middle school team in the league. They set a goal of $5,000 to assist players with their participate fees.
“I’m overwhelmed with the response,” Sloan said.
An informational meeting and equipment checkout is March 4 in Springfield. Sloan said he would receive more details about Houston’s schedule then.
In the meantime, Sloan has been hosting after-school workouts four days a week with middle and high school athletes. Position specific drills are Mondays and Wednesdays at the Big Red Building and speed drills are Tuesdays and Thursdays in the elementary gym or other locations on campus. Sloan said more than 60 athletes are participating in the speed workouts.
