A national retailer has announced plans to locate in Houston.

The nation’s largest dollar store announced plans Tuesday to open in April in Houston.

Dollar Tree, headquartered in Chesapeake, Va., will occupy about 8,000 square foot in a commercial building next to Crowley’s HomeWorks near South Sam Houston Blvd. and West Highway 17. Renovations are underway to the structure. A tentative opening date of mid-April has been set.

Dollar Tree, which has roots more than 60 years old, is the largest and most successful single-price-point retailer in North America, operating thousands of stores across 48 contiguous U.S. states and five Canadian provinces. Family Dollar recently agreed to merge with Dollar Tree.  Every item in Dollar Tree is priced at $1. In this area, stores are situated at St. Robert, West Plains, Rolla and Lebanon.

“We’re really excited about locating there. We think it will be a good location,” said Angie Broyles, district manager.

It is estimated 29 jobs will be created: 25 part-time associates, two part-time assistant managers, a full-time manager and a store manager. An employment ad is published on the Herald classified pages this week.
