Wilda Jane Montgomery Blankenship, 90, passed away Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at her home in Houston.
She was born Nov. 13, 1924, in Houston, daughter of William and Leona Sutton Montgomery. She and Dillard Blankenship “Junior” were married March 23, 1947. He passed away in 1993.
She was a lifelong Houston resident. She lived 68 years on the farm after marriage. Her mother was a direct descendent of Valentine Sutton, one of the pioneer founders of Houston.
She enjoyed family events at her home, including light bread and jellies, hunting for Easter eggs, running from the Halloween witch or finding a special present under the Christmas tree.
She raised Angus cattle that topped the market in Springfield as well as prize-winning chickens. She made black walnut carvings of birds and plants as well as intricate quilts and needlework. She gave flower bulbs and cuttings to neighbors, family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; five siblings, Lillie Sharpe of Tiffin, Ohio, Earl Montgomery of Cabool; and Stonewall Montgomery, John Montgomery and Marvin Montgomery of Houston; and two brothers-in-law.
Survivors include a sister, Ruby Gettys of Cabool; three sisters-in-law; and eight nieces and nephews.
Private services were Wednesday, Feb. 18, at Evans Funeral Home.
