A candlelight vigil tonight in Houston will honor those impacted by the Feb. 26 shootings in Tyrone.
The event, which is sponsored by the Houston Ministerial Alliance, is 7 p.m. inside Hiett Gymnasium on the campus of Houston High School. Doors open to the public at 6 p.m. Candles will be provided at the door.
The vigil will include representatives from both the Aldridge and Shriver families, who lost seven family members in the shootings. Pastor Cordie Wimberley of Souls Harbor Family Worship will also share and Pastor Nick Melton will lead songs.
Caleb Arthur, who created the Facebook page “Praying for Tyrone Texas County MO,” was instrumental in organizing the vigil.
“If it was me that this tragic event happened to, I would like to see the community come together to show God’s love for my loved ones I had lost,” Arthur said. “It just really felt like the right thing to do.”
A moment of prayer was held Sunday morning through the Facebook page Arthur created. It received posts of support from Missouri, rom Texas, Pennsylvania, Florida, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, California, Nevada, Mississippi, Illinois, Tennessee, New Mexico, Kansas, Oklahoma, Oregon, New York and Canada.
More than 3,800 people have responded as “attending” the moment of prayer.
“I had no idea the Facebook page would get so many followers,” Arthur said. “I was basically making the page to be able to give it to the family so they could have a support system. I’ve seen people from all over the country reach out to these families. It’s moving, that’s for sure.”
