Oletta Mae (Wallace) Jones passed away in the arms of her loved ones on April 11, 2015, at the age of 86.
Oletta was born Sept. 13, 1928, in Mannford, Okla., and moved to Missouri as a child, attending school in Barnum, Alice, Gravel Point, Oak Hill and Houston. She married LeRoy “Shorty” Jones on March 15, 1947, and they welcomed their daughter, Diana, to the family in 1952. Oletta worked at International Shoe and then, for many years as a supervisor at the HD Lee factory until she retired.
Oletta loved to spend her time visiting and traveling with Shorty until his passing in 1995. After his death, she joined the OWLS and was blessed with support and friendships she carried to her last days. Oletta loved to read and crossstitch and never missed a St. Louis Cardinals game. She always listened on the radio if the TV announcers weren’t cheering for her team.
She enjoyed having dinner with her “Lee Girls” and volunteering at the Texas County Hospital. She was an avid Red Hatter and couldn’t wait to see what kind of trouble she and the other girls would get into at each of their meetings! Oletta was always so proud of her daughter and bragged to all who would listen about how good she was and how much she loved her. She spent countless hours watching her son-in-law play in softball tournaments over the years and loved the rivalries and competition.
She spoke many times of her best vacation ever being when she visited her “kids” in New York and saw Niagara Falls. Her grand kids were the light of her life and she never missed an event they were involved in. She loved them beyond measure. Her great-grandson was her entire world. They babysat each other in the summers and on school breaks and conspired to cause much mischief. No one cheered louder or clapped harder at his games than his “Granny Great.”
Oletta is survived by many friends, family and loved ones. She will be deeply missed and always loved by her daughter, Diana Jones; son-in-law, Gary Head; her two grandchildren, Valerie and Mike Head; and her great-grandson Bryson Head.
She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy “Shorty” Jones; her parents, Ben and Opal Wallace; and two sisters; Nelda Sue Wallace and Doris Hayes.
A visitation and celebration of Oletta’s life will be held from 10-11 a.m. Thursday, April 16, 2015, at Evans Funeral Home. Going Home services will begin at 11 a.m. at Evans Funeral Home. Her final rest will be in Boone Creek Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Pallbearers are Ronnie Baker, Keith Cantrell, Jimmy Hayes, Tommy Hayes, Dennis Ball and Shane Wade.
