Revenue from a one-cent sales tax in Houston jumped nearly 12 percent from the same period a year ago, reports the Missouri Department of Revenue in the latest monthly distribution.
The total was $59,083, up $6,277 from a year ago. For the first quarter of the year, the total was $181,069, up $15,384 or 9.3 percent from 2014.
Some merchants remit sales reports monthly and others quarterly.
Two quarter-cent sales taxes also are collected for streets, sidewalks and utility work. Each contributed nearly $14,000 for month. In the first quarter of the year, about $43,000 was collected on each by retailers.
An eighth-cent sales tax for debt repayment on a fire truck totaled $6,966, up $617 from a year ago.
The reports are considered a good barometer of economic activity.
