In 1950, Texas County gathered attention well beyond its borders due to a barrel on the John Orr farm in Simmons that supposedly was always full of water – regardless of weather conditions.
While some people believed in the “miracle” of the “bottomless barrel,” others figured it was a prank or at least had a practical explanation.
Numerous articles related to the barrel appeared on the pages of the Houston Herald in 1950, and stories about it continued popping up for decades.
Those and other articles from the past are available for viewing online in the Herald archives.
