Veterans Affairs Day is 10 a.m. Thursday at the American Legion/VFW Post in Salem on West Highway 32.

The day is being held in an outreach effort to veterans of rural Missouri in the 16th District so they don’t have to travel a long distance to get answers for VA-related questions. The district includes Crawford, Dent, Howell, Laclede, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski, Shannon, Texas, and Wright counties.

Representatives attending from the Department of Veterans Affairs will include enrollment and claims processing specialists. The Missouri Veterans Commission will have service officers at the event.  There will also be representatives from organizations that provide aid to homeless veterans and those who need help with living expenses. Representative from elected officials, including Congressman Jason Smith and U.S. Sens. Claire McCaskill and Roy Blunt, are also expected.

It doesn’t matter when you served or which branch, if you have a question or issues to be addressed, you are invited. Many veterans are missing out on benefits they aren’t even aware of, according to an organizer of the event.

To attend or for more information, call the Salem American Legion/VFW post at 573-729-3710 to be scheduled. If you cannot attend, call the post and give your name and contact information so you will receive a follow-up contact.
