Local residents gained another option for a place to buy groceries when B & P Discount Grocery opened March 10 in the Houston Plaza strip mall on U.S. 63 north of town.

The store is owned by Aurora residents David Martin and his wife, Patsy, a pair Cabool natives who grew up and attended high school there.

“We offer discount products at a 50 to 75 percent off the regular price,” Martin said. “Some are still in dates, some are out of date, but we follow health laws. We do what they tell us we can do.”

Martin has 30 years of experience in the grocery industry. He has owned stores similar to the new Houston location in several towns (including Cabool, Aurora, Cassville and Piece City) and once simultaneously owned three discount grocery stores, and he and Patsy even had a B & P store in the same Houston strip mall until about eight years ago.

“We started out about three miles north of Cabool on the Big Piney River, and that’s how we came up with the ‘b and p,’” he said. “And my nickname is ‘Bo’ and my wife’s name is Patsy, so it works that way, too.

B & P Discount Grocery accepts EBT cards and all major credit cards. For store hours and other information, call 417-967-0714.
