A Wellston woman was arrested Friday on charges she was attempting to smuggle heroin into the South Central Correctional Center at Licking, authorities said.

A joint investigation between the Licking Police Department and the Missouri Department of Corrections (MDOC) on Friday resulted in the arrest of a woman on multiple drug charges. 

According to LPD Chief Scott Lindsay, a police officer and an MDOC investigator contacted a visitor suspected of delivering drugs into South Central Correctional Center. After speaking with the officers, the suspect admitted to attempting to deliver a controlled substance into the facility, and what was believed to be heroin was found in her possession.

Janay J.M. Nettles, 20, of Wellston, was arrested for possession and distribution of a controlled substance. She was transported to the Texas County Jail and placed on a 24-hour hold.

A probable cause statement was submitted to the Texas County prosecuting attorney seeking formal charges.
