A new system was no problem for the Houston High School volleyball team in its season opener

First-year HHS volleyball coach Barry Wheeler charts stats from the sidelines during Tuesday’s match against Licking.
The Lady Tigers were victorious in their debut Tuesday night under new head coach Barry Wheeler by beating Licking 25-22, 25-18 inside Hiett Gymnasium.
“With a new system and new philosophies, it can sometimes be difficult to look smooth on the floor, but we looked pretty smooth on the floor,” Wheeler said.
Senior Katelyn Martinez led HHS (1-0) with seven kills. Camryn Sheets had 12 assists.
The Lady Tigers, who received three aces apiece from Abby Casper and Emily Shea, won despite 11 service errors. HHS had an 81 percent serving percentage – nine points below where Wheeler wants the team.
“We will continue to serve aggressively,” Wheeler said. “We know in order for us to compete, we’ve got to serve tough.”
The JV Lady Tigers rallied for a 21-25, 25-23, 16-14 victory in the opening match.
