HHS softball

Playing seven times in six days proved to be a tough task for the Houston softball team.

The Lady Tigers won three times in a busy week beginning with a 17-11 victory last Monday against Seymour. HHS also won 10-4 Friday at Mansfield and had a 20-19 win against Springfield Glendale on Saturday in the St. James Tournament.

The team had two regular-season losses –– 18-2 last Tuesday to Norwood and 10-1 the next day against Salem –– as well as a pair of defeats Saturday in the St. James Tournament.

The tournament kicked off early Saturday morning with a 12-4 loss to the host team St. James. Autumn Walker, Stephani Crewse and Madison Lawson accounted for the team’s lone hits.

Later that afternoon, Lawson went 3-for-3 with a double, triple and career-best six RBIs as the Lady Tigers out-slugged Springfield Glendale. Tori McCloud and Kaitlyn Root scored four times apiece in the victory.

Sophomore Carly Crawford threw all seven innings for her first career varsity victory. She gave up 14 hits and 10 earned runs while walking six and striking out three.

The Lady Tigers concluded the tournament with a 4-2 loss to Newburg. Walker and McCloud had two hits apiece.

Lawson was named to the all-tournament team.

Last Wednesday against Salem, McCloud had a pair of hits in the nine-run loss. Houston committed eight errors as it fell to 0-2 in the South Central Association.

On Friday, Aryanna Morgan was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs in Houston’s victory at Mansfield. Lawson and Abbey Slocum added two hits apiece.

Freshman Emily Roberts was the complete-game winner. She struck out six and walked six while allowing one hit. All four runs were unearned.
