Judges with the Missouri Community Betterment Program were in Houston on Sept. 15. 

Judges with the Missouri Community Betterment Program will tour Houston on Sept. 15 and learn about improvements to the town last year.

The community will vie for honors in its population category. Earlier, a project book was submitted to the statewide program by Community Betterment and Arts Council of Houston Inc.

Here are the 2014 projects completed and those speaking at 9 a.m. at the Houston Storm Shelter:

•Houston Visioning 2014 on a plan to develop the town’s future, Elaine Campbell.

•Melba Theatre and Lone Star Annex on more than $500,000 raising for the improvements, Brad Gentry.

•Texas County Justice Center high tunnel, Verlin Altom.

•Houston Farmers Market expansion, shades for a Lone Star Plaza awning and creation of a commercial kitchen, Campbell.

•Mayor’s walking challenge that promoted healthy lifestyles, Don Tottingham.

•Community Betterment YOUTH community garden, Amber Lange.

•YOUTH community yard sale, Lange.

Last year, Houston took fourth in the contest. The youth group won second.
