The Houston softball team won consecutive games last week for its first winning streak of the season.
After defeating Hartville 8-2 last Tuesday at home, the Lady Tigers beat Ava 10-5 on the road two days later for their first victory in the South Central Association.
The back-to-back wins moved HHS (7-9, 1-2 SCA) two wins shy of the .500 mark – a feat the program has met or exceeded in all three seasons under coach Brent Hall.
At Ava, Stephani Crewse, Tori McCloud and Carly Crawford drove home two runs apiece in the five-run victory. Autumn Walker and Shelby Cremer each had two hits.
Crawford gave up seven hits in the complete-game victory. She struck out one and walked seven. Only two of the five runs were earned.
Houston took control early by scoring seven times in the top of the first inning.
After the first three batters reached, McCloud doubled home a pair of runs. Taylor Chipps had a RBI single and Crawford and Madison Lawson followed with sacrifice flys to make it 5-0.
Cremer singled to score Chipps and later came around to score on Walker’s double.
Two days earlier, Chipps was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI’s in Houston’s home victory against Hartville.
Abbey Slocum, Crewse and Cremer added two hits apiece for HHS. Kaitlyn Root and Slocum both drove in two runs.
Crawford scattered eight hits in the victory. She struck out one and walked five. Both runs were earned.
After falling behind 2-0, the Lady Tigers pulled even with a pair of runs in the second and scored in three of the next four innings to pull away.
