Twirlees Ice Cream owner Tony Bieller makes a Twirlee inside the business that opened in June on U.S. 63 in Houston. Twirlees and the adjacent Twirlee Q Barbecue will host a benefit today for the Houston Rural Fire Department.

Twirlee Q Barbecue and Twirlees Ice Cream will conduct a fundraiser for the Houston Rural Fire Department today (Sept. 19).

Owner Tony Bieller said half of the proceeds from all sales at the two food trailers (on U.S. 63 next to Casey’s General Store) will be given to Houston Rural.

“The way I came up with the idea is, the community has supported us very much since we started and I wanted to give back in some way,” Bieller said. “I figured calling the fire department would be one good way to start.”

Houston Rural Chief Don Gaston said a pumper truck and a rescue vehicle would be on hand during the day, so people could get an up close look at the vehicles and equipment responders use. Gaston said membership dues could be paid at the site, and contributions to the rescue unit would be accepted.

Proceeds given to Houston Rural will go toward the purchase of a new thermal imaging camera.

“It takes this kind of thing to help us keep going,” Gaston said. “Everything costs so much now.

“Having a merchant offer to do this will be a first for me. It’s great – whatever we make will be more than we had.”

Bieller said he plans giveaways of several items, including a fire pit, a Weber grill and grill accessories. The event is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will continue until interest subsides.

“It’s great that Tony’s willing to do this,” Gaston said, “so it would be great for people to come here and give it a try. You’ll be helping him, but you’ll also be helping us the same way he is.”
