The Houston High School volleyball team is unbeaten in regular-season play.
The Lady Tigers got their third victory of the season last Thursday by beating Summersville 25-20, 25-16 inside Hiett Gymnasium.
Houston went 0-3-1 against bigger schools at the Branson Invitational. Away from that tournament, the Lady Tigers are 3-0.
“Our kids are getting better each day,” first-year HHS coach Barry Wheeler said. “We are finding out more and more about their abilities and working on bettering their strengths and improving their weaknesses.
“Every day, girls are staying after practice and working on a specific skill they want to improve on. As a coach, that is very exciting and encouraging to see. Sometimes I get so into it, we’ve stayed an extra hour.”
Junior Abby Casper had a team-best six kills in the victory. Alyssa Hayes, Emily Shea and Sarah Kelley had four apiece.
Camryn Scheets led HHS with 14 assists. She was one of four players who had an ace.
Wheeler praised senior Katelyn Martinez, who accepted a move from middle hitter to the right side to increase the team’s blocking and improve defensive production.
“It was a tough decision to move Katelyn, especially being her senior year and all, but that is what the team needed at this point of the season,” Wheeler said. “Katelyn is showing her leadership by accepting this role change.”
