Leonard Eugene “Bud” Garrett, 86, son of Jasper Sherman and Clara Elizabeth (Jordan) Garrett, was born April 15, 1929, at Success, Mo. He passed away Oct. 20, 2015, at Licking, Mo., after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Lorene and Gladys; and two brothers, Charles and Keith.

Bud graduated from Ellis Prairie Elementary School and attended Houston High School. He joined the U.S. Navy on Jan. 1, 1951, and was honorably discharged on July 1, 1955, as a 3rd Class Boatswains Mate after serving in the Korean War.

He married Dovie Boyd on Feb. 25, 1956. He worked for Smith Lumber Co for 45 years as a mechanic, truck driver, welder and an equipment operator. Bud had many talents and gifts, he trained horses to foxtrot, enjoyed square dancing, tinkering with motors, hunting, going on trail rides and bee keeping. He was everyone’s favorite mechanic, if someone tore it up, Bud could fix it.

Bud was a member of Success Baptist Church for 22 years, a longtime member of the VFW and the first founding board member of the WS District #1.

Bud is survived by his wife of 59 years, Dovie of the home his stepson, Austin Dwane Boyd and wife, Kay, of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren, Tracy Boyd of Vallejo, Calif., Alan Boyd and wife, Ipek, of Portland, Maine, Melissa Baier of Wichita, Kan., and Jeremy Baier and wife, Jenna, of Bloomington, Ill.; two great-granddaughters, Amelia Reimers and Corinne Boyd; four sisters, Maxine Johnson of Linden, Texas, Imogene Collins of Success, Mo., Sudie York and husband, Ray, of Rolla, Mo., and Judy Hutsell and husband, Lonnie, of Linden, Texas; and two brothers, Robert “Bob” Garrett of Success, Mo., and Ralph Garrett and wife, Gladys, of Success, Mo.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Services were 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, at Evans Funeral Home with Pastor Ted Moore officiating. Burial was in Emery Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Pallbearers were Denny Bailey, Don Hutsell, Virgle McCown, Bill Ramsey, Al Root and Bruce Smith. Honorary pallbearers were Rick Collins, Rubert Smith, Bob Ramsey and Kien Su.
