Evelyn Sue Douglas Hickerson, 68, passed away in a car accident Thursday, Nov. 5, 2015.

She was born April 30, 1947, in Waynesville, daughter of Leland and Doris Branson Douglas. She and Galen Hickerson were married Oct. 11, 1968, at Oak Hill Christian Church.

She grew up in the White Rock community and in 1970 earned her bachelor of Christian education degree from Ozark Christian College in Joplin. While there, she met her husband, Galen.

She served alongside her husband in ministry at churches in Arkansas, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas during a 35-year span. During that time she also worked in local nursing centers as a certified nursing assistant and worked as an emergency medical technician with ambulance services at local hospitals. Later, she returned to school to earn her degree as a licensed practical nurse. She retired from nursing after several years at Christian Healthcare and Rehabilitation North in Lebanon.

Her biggest joy was in local church ministry. She enjoyed being active in children’s programming, church camp, women’s Bible study and music throughout her lifetime. Most recently she was happily working with Wednesday night children’s classes and her women’s group at the First Christian Church of Houston.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leland Jr.; and her husband, Galen.

Survivors include a son, Allen Hickerson of Pawnee, Ill.; a daughter, Carolyn Davis of Tulsa, Okla.; a sister, Cathy Sirdoreus of Bucyrus; two grandsons; and two nephews.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, at First Christian Church in Houston. Cremation was under the direction of Evans Funeral Home.
