Military veteran

Herbert Martin Douglas, 89, son of Oscar and Lottie (Hoeck) Douglas, was born Dec. 5, 1925, in Bucyrus, Mo. He passed away Nov. 5, 2015, in an automobile accident, one month shy of his 90th birthday.

Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Gary Lee Douglas; one brother, Leland Douglas; and two sisters Margaret Douglas Walls and Lois Douglas Steele.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Beulah of the home; one son, Don (Gayla) Douglas of Springfield; two daughters, Mary (Bobby) Hebblethwaite of Cabool and Leta Douglas of Houston; four grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; his brothers, Walter Douglas (Laveda) of Bucyrus, Mo., and Cecil Douglas of Salt Lake City, Utah; and sister, Gladys Criss.

Herbert graduated from Houston High School in 1945 after spending one year and eight months in the United States Navy during World War II.

Herbert was a member of the Houston First Christian Church for over 50 years. He was an Honor Flight participant. Following retirement from the Civil Service at Fort Leonard Wood, Herbert enjoyed spending time outdoors, gardening, cutting wood and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting with family and friends.

Herbert was always ready to place aside his work to help his family and friends and felt that each day was a gift from God, to be enjoyed living for him. He will genuinely be missed, leaving a hole in so many lives that can never be filled. We know that he is marveling at Heaven’s perfect beauty and is rejoicing in the presence of the Lord that he has lived his life glorifying.

Services were 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 9, 2015, at Houston First Christian Church with Don Elliott and Don Crockett officiating. Burial with full military honors followed in Pine Lawn Cemetery under the direction of Evans Funeral Home. Pallbearers were: Eli Flowers, Rolla McCoy, Roger McCoy, Brad Douglas, Greg Douglas and Garold McCoy. Honorary pallbearers were: Bob Gentry, Don Odle, Don McCoy, David Goodman and Joshua Hebblethwaite.
