A Plato man was killed early Sunday in a crash that was discovered after one of the injured was successful in traveling to a Highway M home, authorities said.
Dead is Toby W. Mathes, 38, who was the driver of an eastbound 1988 Jeep Grand Cherokee that failed to negotiate a curve, ran off the right side of the highway and struck an embankment, ejecting the driver and a passenger, Tpr. Travis Brown said. The vehicle came to rest on a fence after the 2 a.m. crash that was reported at about 8 a.m.
Daniel G. Stephens, 32, of Huggins, had serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Texas County Memorial Hospital. Donna M. Hunter, 35, of Houston, had moderate injuries and also went to TCMH.
About six hours after the crash, Hunter was able to reach a home about 20 yards away to get help. Cell service for some carriers is reported spotty in that region.
Foggy conditions prevented the deployment of medical helicopters. Mathes was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body released to Fox Funeral Home, Licking.
The accident was four miles south of Roby. Brown said no one was wearing a seat belt.
Assisting at the scene was Sgt. George Falterman, Tpr. R.D. Crewse, Sgt. Brian Gruban and the Roby Fire Department.
