Both directions of Interstate 70 have been closed in St Charles County near Highway 79 in St Peters due to rising flood waters from the Dardenne Creek, MoDOT said Sunday afternoon.

The eastbound lanes closed around noon Sunday and the westbound lanes closed around 2:30 p.m. Interstate 70 is not expected to reopen until late Sunday night or early Monday.

Motorists who need to use eastbound I-70 in St Charles County can exit at Interstate 64 eastbound to Highway 364 eastbound. Highway 364 connects to Interstate 270 in St. Louis County and from there motorists can reconnect to Interstate 70.  Westbound I-70 travelers will have to exit the highway at Highway 94 in St Charles. They can take westbound Highway 94 to westbound I-64 to connect back to I-70.

In addition, Interstate 49 is closed in Carthage. There are more than 180 roads closed across the state due to flooding.

Motorists who travel today are advised to have their headlights on, watch for ponding water on highways and slow down.  If a road is closed due to flooding, do not drive through. Turn around and don’t drown. Check road conditions before you go at MoDOT’s Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org/map/. The Traveler Information Map is also available as free app for Android and iPhones
