Texas County Farm Bureau celebrated agriculture last week with several activities.
Members of the Texas County Commission signed a proclamation to celebrate farmers and agriculture from Feb. 7-13 as part of “Thank a Farmer,” an activity spearheaded by Missouri Farm Bureau.
There were six and as many as 10 Texas County Farm Bureau board members at Houston Town and Country Supermarket on Tuesday, Feb. 9, serving coffee, cookies and fudge to customers.
Members visited with them and enrolled some in memberships. Phil Terry and Sharon Hamilton, both of Houston, were winners of two $25 gift certificates donated by Farm Bureau and Town and Country Supermarket.
Mike Leurssen, chairman of the promotion and education committee, visited with Cabool Head Start children and Terra Hutsell traveled to Houston, Licking and Summersville Head Start groups. Each was presented coloring materials and discussed animal agriculture. The children were asked, “What does a farmer get from a cow?” The quick response was milk. When asked what a farmer gets from chickens, it was minute before one child said eggs.
“It is easy to take for granted that children know about farms, there used to be so many of them – but do they know their food does not come from a store?” observed Primrose Casey of the Texas County Farm Bureau. “Do they know their clothes made of cotton are a part of agriculture? Do they know wood is part of the timber industry, which is also agriculture? Quiz your child or grandchild, you might get a surprise answer.”
A special agriculture tabloid appeared Feb. 3 in the Houston Herald and was used in classrooms at the Houston School District.
