Dr. Merlyn Johnson

The St. James board of education has selected a Texas County superintendent to be its next leader.

Dr. Merlyn Johnson, who is the superintendent of the Summersville School, has been named to the top job for the St. James R-1 School District. Johnson will begin his duties July 1 in St. James for the start of the 2016-2017 school year.

According to a Feb. 18 announcement, Johnson first started his teaching career at the Arkansas Department of Correction School District in Pine Bluff, Ark. In 1998, he was hired at North Pemiscot Co. R-1 School District in Wardell, Mo.

There he taught social science courses and coached high school baseball. He also served as a teacher and coach at Poplar Bluff R-1 and Clarkton C-4 school districts, teaching math, science and social studies.In 2005, he was promoted to the principal position at Clarkton C-4, where he served in that role for five years.

He was hired as the new high school principal at Summersville for the 2010-11 school year. He served as the principal for one year before becoming the superintendent in that district.

Johnson enjoys spending time with his family and cheering on all academic and athletic contests. He is also an avid Kansas City Royals and Chiefs fan.
