Verna Ruth Payne Kaut, 90, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, at Mountain View Healthcare.

She was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Hattie, daughter of Alexander “Alex” and Gertrude “Gertie” Baker Payne. She and Calvin Kaut were married Jan. 9, 1944, in Camp Water, Texas.

She helped her husband, Calvin, in the livestock business for many years on their farm in Arroll and Mountain View Live Stock Auction. She ran a small restaurant in the sale barn throughout the years. She worked at several restaurants in Mountain View, including two owned by her nephews.

She retired from Summersville Elementary School after cooking for about 12 years.

After retiring, she continued helping Calvin with the livestock as well as tending to her gardening and chickens. In the later years, she moved to Mountain View, where she remained until her passing.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 68 years, Calvin; two sons, Calvin Jr. and Melvin; two grandsons; 10 brothers, Talbert, Ray, Clyde, Tom, Harley, Harry, Lester, Howard, Frankie, Leonard; and two sisters, Lula Burks and Allie Woolsey.

Survivors include five children, Robert and Jack of Mountain View, Jerry of Houston, Wanda Cooper of Summersville and Cindy White of Lumberton, Texas; a brother, Charley Payne of Arizona,; 17 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Services were Saturday, Feb. 20, at Bradford Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Bradford, the Rev. Kendall Ford and Eric Kaut officiating.
