Kennedy Campbell and Gabriel Pacheco wave to passersby Friday morning through Houston.

More than 170 life-size crosses lined U.S. 63 on Good Friday as area believers united for the fifth annual Carry The Cross.

The movement, which originated with Pastor David Craig in Sikeston, calls for Christians in Texas County to stand as witnesses for Christ. More than 800 people participated as crosses covered nearly every quarter-mile from Cabool to Licking.

Jeff McNiell, who coordinates the effort in the county through Undivided Hearts, said the unified message of the cross has impacted both passersby and those participating.

“This is one of the most powerful, unifying days in our county each year,” McNiell said. “Denominational lines fall as Jesus is lifted up. Something incredibly powerful happens when we unite in His name.”

Participants in Texas County joined other Christians across the state as they stood with 10-foot crosses from 7-11 a.m. The crosses, made of PVC pipe, will be provided to those who participate. Locations are assigned through Undivided Hearts.

“Our goal is to make this as easy as possible for everyone,” McNiell said. “The crosses are paid for, so there is no cost involved. And someone will drop the cross off at your location, then pick it up later. What we’re seeking are people –– whether they be individuals, groups or even churches –– who will hold the cross as a witness for Jesus for four hours that day.”

The day started at 6 a.m. as those participating met at Hiett Gymnasium for instructions, worship, a brief message and group photo.

Updates and news are posted on Facebook at www.facebook.com/undividedhearts.

“Many people may not feel like they can speak from a stage, sing or even answer questions about their faith. But we can all hold a cross,” McNiell said. “We obey the command to witness and trust the Holy Spirit moves in the hearts of those who see the crosses. We’ve seen it happen in past years and expect God will move in the same way this year.”
