Houston High School’s retiring principal will be the featured speaker for the 2016 baccalaureate service this evening
Charlie Malam, who is winding down a 30-year career in education, will address this year’s graduating class and those attending the annual service at 6 p.m. Sunday inside Hiett Gymnasium. The service is hosted by the Houston Ministerial Alliance.
A 1981 HHS graduate, Malam spent two stints at his alma mater. He served in various capacities for 21 years at Houston Schools and was the middle school principal when he resigned in 2007 to accept the same position at Willow Springs. He was the superintendent at Raymondville Schools when he was hired in 2012 to become HHS principal.
Along with his administrative duties, Malam was a longtime teacher and coach in Houston. He is the all-time winningest coach in HHS boys’ basketball history with more than 100 career victories.
Among the 2016 graduates Malam will address is his son, Skylur. Malam’s daughters, Trezha and Lexie, are also HHS graduates and his wife, Lisa, is the middle school secretary.
