Bids were opened last week for an expansion of a county library branch at Cabool.

A Springfield firm is the apparent low bidder for an expansion and remodeling of the Cabool branch of the Texas County Library.

Members opened the bids for the project last week. Four bids were received: Trotter Construction, Springfield, $505,787.56; Peterson Construction Co Inc., Mountain Grove, $509,640; C & M Contractors Inc., Doniphan, $559,000; and Cahill Construction Inc., Salem, $607,700. Each also submitted the required bonding.

Integrity Engineering of Rolla, the architect on the Texas County Library Foundation project, will review the low bid and seek approval from the State of Missouri, which is financing a portion of the project through a Community Development Block Grant. Private donations, county library funding and contributions eligible for the Neighborhood Assistance Program will finance the balance. The latter gives a generous state tax credit — 70 cents for every $1 contributed — and the donation also is eligible for a federal tax deduction. Persons interested can call Molly Shelton, library director, at 417-967-2258.

Once started, construction is expected to take seven months. The project includes about 1,600 square feet of additional space.

Plans call for a major exterior makeover that will include brick and stone on the front of the building and interior changes that result in additional space for patrons.
